Different types of hosting
There are many different types of hosting. The type of hosting you choose depends on what type of site you want to build.
There are different vendors such as DIY hosts for people new to creating websites, high-volume providers that sell shared hosting accounts to thousands of users, and high-end vendors of dedicated servers, which provide nearly unlimited amounts of space, machines, bandwidth, and support for large-scale web operations.
The types of hosting include:
- Window hosting - Hosting on a Microsoft Window server means you can rely on the expertise and experience of a robust, established team in a highly competitive industry. Window hosting is ideal if you have minimal programming knowledge and want to rely on a familiar, popular hosting server.
- Linux hosting - Hosting on a Linux server means you have access to effective and efficient open source technologies. The platform gives you a versatility and malleability as well as providing you with a free or very low cost operating system.
- Shared hosting - Your website is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. Typically, all domains may share a common pool of server resources.
- Dedicated hosting - You have your own dedicated server, with full control over it. You have full administrative access to the box, which means you are responsible for the security and maintenance of your own dedicated server.
- Managed hosting - You lease a managed server from a host who provides a robust level of support and maintenance on the server. Maintenance usually includes services such as server uptime monitoring, a hardware warranty and security patch updates.
- Reseller hosting - Allows you to become a web host yourself. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a provider. Resellers' accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own shared server to a colocated server.
- DNS hosting - DNS hosting is a service that runs Domain Name System servers. Domain name registrars include DNS hosting service with registration.
